A new blood test that searches for signals associated with more than 50 types of cancer is now being offered in Brazil by Grupo Fleury and Einstein through Genesis Genomics. Called Galleri, the test analyzes circulating DNA fragments and methylation patterns to look for cancer-related signals before symptoms appear.
The aim is to expand screening particularly for cancers that do not yet have routine tests for the general population, including some pancreatic, ovarian, liver, stomach and esophageal tumors.
Who may be eligible
The test is initially aimed mainly at people without symptoms aged 50 or older, those with a family history of cancer or people with risk factors. The reported price in Brazil is around R$6,990.
It is not a diagnosis and does not replace prevention tests
The key point is that Galleri does not confirm a cancer diagnosis. It identifies a signal that must be assessed by physicians through follow-up testing and, when appropriate, biopsy.
It also does not replace mammograms, colonoscopies, Pap tests, low-dose CT scans for eligible groups or any other guideline-recommended screening. A negative result likewise does not remove the need to keep preventive tests up to date.
According to Fleury, the test is intended as a complementary screening tool. It may help trigger earlier investigations, but it is not part of Brazil’s public health system.
