Making money online is possible. In most cases, however, it is not a button, an automation or a “secret formula”: it is a business, with a product, audience, routine, costs, risk and time to mature. The difference between an opportunity and a trap is often found in what is left unsaid before you buy.

This guide is not against affiliate marketing, content creation, advertising, online stores, digital services or artificial intelligence. Each can work. The important distinction is between a business model and a sales pitch: a method can be legitimate and still not suit everyone, produce quick results or eliminate work.

The uncomfortable truth: the internet changes work; it does not remove it

A digital activity may require less initial capital than a physical shop, but it is not free. Someone still needs to research, create content, edit video, answer customers, issue invoices, fix pages, review data, solve technical problems, study platform rules and test distribution channels. If you do not do it yourself, someone else must — and that becomes a cost.

The common mistake is confusing a tool with a business. A website does not create an audience. An affiliate account does not create trust. Dozens of AI-generated texts do not automatically create usefulness. Paid traffic does not guarantee a margin. Tools can speed up part of the work, but they do not replace strategy, quality, distribution or relationships with an audience.

When “free” tools stop being free

Free tiers can be genuinely useful for website building, email, design, automation, storage, analytics, CRM, initial hosting and AI tools. They are good for testing. The challenge begins when a project needs volume, a team, a custom domain, integrations, more contacts, security, support or sales features.

There is nothing wrong with platforms charging for professional use. The problem is presenting a free plan as the permanent structure of a company. Before choosing any tool, ask not only “what does it cost today?” but “what will it cost when I have 1,000 contacts, 10,000 visits, orders, ads, integrations and another person on the team?”

  • Hosting: introductory pricing may cover only the first term; renewal, backups, security, email and performance may cost extra.
  • Email marketing: free tiers usually cap contacts, sends or automations.
  • AI and design: credits, exports, advanced models and commercial use may require a subscription.
  • Online stores and payments: monthly fees, themes, apps, payment processing, anti-fraud tools, shipping and support all enter the equation.
  • Advertising: the cost is not just ad spend; it also includes creative, testing, landing pages, monitoring and campaigns that do not convert.

AdSense is not “build a blog, add ads and wait”

Programmatic advertising can complement a website’s income, but it is rarely a magic solution at the beginning. Google requires original, relevant content that complies with its policies, as well as control over the submitted site’s source code. The review also considers whether the site is reachable, has clear navigation and provides a sensible user experience.

Google’s own guidance says that sites with insufficient original content, low-value pages, technical issues or policy violations may not be ready to show ads. A review often takes a few days, but in some cases can take two to four weeks. Even after approval, there is no guarantee that relevant ads will appear on every page or that revenue will be predictable.

Another detail rarely mentioned in “monetize in 24 hours” videos: ads cannot be placed next to prohibited, misleading or copied content. Publishers are responsible even for third-party content and user comments on monetized pages. That means moderation, privacy information, performance, security and continuous editorial care.

Affiliate marketing can work — but it requires trust and disclosure

Affiliate marketing is easy to describe: someone recommends a product or service and receives a commission if a sale happens under the programme’s terms. The difficult part is building a recommendation worthy of trust. A useful review, an honest comparison, a well-served audience and real knowledge of a niche can create genuine value.

Shortcuts such as fake profiles, invented reviews or a network of accounts designed to simulate authority are bad technical, ethical and commercial choices. In addition to violating platform rules and risking suspension, they create a base that the business does not truly own: if the accounts disappear, the audience and credibility may disappear with them. The same applies to AI-generated text and images published without review, testing or editorial accountability.

AI can reduce time spent on research, drafting, first-line support and organisation. It cannot guarantee that a product is good, that information is current, that a claim is accurate or that a campaign will profit. The publisher remains responsible for verifying facts, protecting data, serving consumers and correcting mistakes.

Disclosure also matters. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, a useful international reference on advertising, recommends clear disclosure when an affiliate relationship exists. Transparency is not a detail; hiding a commission can damage the trust that keeps a business alive.

What many online “gurus” are actually selling

Not everyone who teaches digital business acts in bad faith. Some professionals show process, costs, limitations and verifiable cases. Caution is needed when a sale relies on artificial urgency, isolated revenue screenshots, rented luxury, guaranteed results, “faceless income” or the claim that copying one page is enough.

In part of this market, the main revenue does not come from the business model being taught, but from selling courses, communities, mentorships, website packages, hosting, tools and commission-based recommendations. That does not automatically make a product invalid. It changes the question a buyer should ask: is the method demonstrated with costs, timeframes, error rates and ordinary cases — or only with its best possible outcome?

  • Be cautious if results are described as guaranteed without risk or a clear share of students who achieved them.
  • Question offers that omit advertising costs, software, taxes, refunds and customer support.
  • Avoid anyone who tells you to use fake accounts, copy content or bypass platform rules.
  • Be sceptical of permanent “last chance” urgency.
  • Look for an explanation of who the method is not suitable for.
  • Prefer evidence over testimonials that cannot be verified.

Revenue is not profit — and profit is not a salary

A video may show R$10,000 in sales while hiding refunds, platform fees, paid media, taxes, commissions, shipping, software, production, chargebacks and hours of work. The figure on a dashboard is not necessarily what remains for the owner.

Before investing, create a simple spreadsheet: expected revenue minus product cost, payment fees, ads, tools, taxes, support and the owner’s pay. If the numbers do not work in a conservative scenario, they will not improve simply because the work happens online.

Where a method is valid — and where luck enters

A method is valid when it describes a testable path: what problem it solves, for whom, with what offer, how it reaches people, what it costs to acquire a customer, how results are measured and under what conditions it may fail. Outcomes still vary by niche, competition, skill, budget, economic timing, platform and execution.

Luck exists: a video can go viral, a topic can explode, a referral can change the scale. But planning a business around virality is like opening a shop while counting only on an unexpected queue. A healthy plan works in ordinary scenarios; luck is a bonus, not the budget.

A more honest way to start

  1. Choose a real problem and a specific audience.
  2. Start with a small offer: a service, useful content, a simple digital product or honest curation.
  3. Use free tools for testing, not as a permanent promise. Record their limits and growth costs.
  4. Measure before scaling. Visits, leads, conversion, acquisition cost, refunds and margin matter more than likes.
  5. Build an asset you control: a consent-based email list, a website, reputation, a community and processes reduce dependence on a single social platform.
  6. Reserve time and money to learn. Not as a guaranteed investment, but as an operating and development cost.

Conclusion: opportunity, yes; miracle, no

The internet has lowered barriers to starting and made it possible to reach people beyond one neighbourhood or city. That is a real opportunity. It has not repealed the basic rules of any business: deliver value, earn trust, control costs, follow rules, serve people well and persist long enough to learn.

The most honest answer to “can you make money online?” is: yes, but not without building something people want, trust and are willing to pay for — and that is still work.
