Senator Carlos Viana (PSD-MG), who is running for reelection, has renewed calls for Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) to explain himself and has publicly called for his removal from the position. Viana accuses Alcolumbre of ordering the Senate floor locked to prevent senators critical of the chamber’s conduct from speaking.
The locked-door episode
In a video posted on social media, Viana showed the plenary chamber’s doors closed and said staff told him the order came from the presidency. According to the senator, he had spent 20 days trying to discuss “the Senate’s most serious issues” with Alcolumbre without a response. Viana had already filed a petition with the Ethics Council seeking an inquiry into the Senate president’s conduct.
Viana linked the closure to the Senate’s delay in taking up impeachment requests against Supreme Court justices, as well as a Court session addressing the case involving Justice Alexandre de Moraes and banker Daniel Vorcaro, of the now-defunct Banco Master. Reporters reached out to Alcolumbre for comment on the episode but received no response.
New allegations tied to Banco Master
In a new statement on Friday (25), Viana escalated his criticism, saying the Senate needs to investigate Alcolumbre’s relationship with Daniel Vorcaro. According to the senator, conversations between the two — which the Senate presidency had previously denied — point to “a conflict of interest” behind the decision to keep the plenary locked. There is no independent confirmation of the content of those conversations so far, nor has Alcolumbre publicly responded to the new allegation.
