Researchers at Fluminense Federal University (UFF) are leading an international study on environmentally sustainable artificial intelligence, known as “Green AI”. The project aims to develop methods and models that reduce computing costs and, in turn, the energy and resources associated with operating AI systems.
According to Rio de Janeiro’s State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (SECTI-RJ), the initiative is supported by Faperj, the Serrapilheira Institute and international partners.
Why AI uses resources
Artificial-intelligence applications run on physical infrastructure: servers, processors, networks and cooling systems. As the volume of data and calculations grows, so can the demand for electricity and for the resources used by data centres.
Green AI does not mean that every AI tool is automatically sustainable. The research seeks ways to achieve useful results with more efficient models, processes and infrastructure, evaluating performance alongside computational impact.
Efficiency as part of technology development
The discussion becomes more important as companies and governments adopt AI in more services. Alongside quality, privacy and security, there is growing need to measure processing costs and energy use.
The researchers aim to contribute to technology development that is more inclusive and sustainable, with tools that can be applied in different contexts. The study does not replace energy policy or environmental targets, but it helps place efficiency at the centre of technical decisions.
