Chinese President Xi Jinping departed Beijing on Wednesday (23) for a state visit to the United States, at the invitation of President Donald Trump. The trip, running through Friday (25), includes a welcome ceremony at the White House and a state dinner in Washington.
Second meeting between the leaders in six months
This will be Xi’s first visit to the White House in 11 years, and the second in-person meeting between the two heads of state since October, following Trump’s visit to China in May of this year. According to Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, the exchange of visits within a six-month window represents a “historic milestone” for relations between the two countries.
The summit comes just days after a round of economic talks in New York, attended by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Topics expected on the bilateral agenda include trade, tariffs, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and the Taiwan issue.
Trade truce expires in November
China and the United States have maintained a truce in their trade war since October 2025, set to expire on November 10. On Tuesday (22), the Chinese spokesperson said Beijing wants to work with Washington to promote stable, constructive relations — one of the themes expected to shape this week’s talks.
